Bread figures called tantawawas for sale in market for Todos Santos festival, Bolivia
Bread figures called tantawawas (or tantahuahuas, literally "bread babies") are made in huge numbers for Todos Santos. They are said to represent the souls of the dead and are always present on altars built during the festival to receive the souls of loved ones. Ladders / escaleras are another common bread offering and believed to help the souls descend from heaven.
