Ruins of abandoned mansion and railway water tower in former Bolivian port of Gatico, Region II, Chile
Gatico was an important Bolivian port in the 19th century, mainly exporting minerals. It was badly damaged by earthquakes and tsunamis in 1868 and 1877. Bolivia's Litoral province was occupied by Chilean forces during the War of the Pacific and became Chilean territory with the signing of treaties in 1884 and 1904. Gatico continued to be used as a port until it was abandoned in 1930.
