Statue of Túpac Amaru II in Plaza de Armas, Yanaoca, Canas Province, Cusco Region, Peru
Túpac Amaru II was born José Gabriel Condorcanqui (he claimed to be a descendent of the last Inca Tupac Amaru) in Canas Province on 19 March 1742. He is famous for leading a large uprising (La Gran Rebelión de Túpac Amaru II) against the Spanish which started on 4 November 1780 (the first major rebellion by indigenous people in Spanish colonies). He was executed by Spanish colonial authorities in Cusco on 18 May 1781. As a result he has become a Peruvian hero and his name and figure has been used by various independence and indigenous rights movements.
