Landlocked Bolivia is sometimes called the Tibet of South America due to its position in the heart of the continent and its amazing high altitude landscapes. Much of the western part of the country is altiplano highlands; the world's largest salt lake (the Salar de Uyuni) is one of its most spectacular features. The Andes mountains separate the highlands from the eastern lowlands; few people know that Bolivia contains some of the best preserved rainforest of the whole Amazon region. It is also noted for its diverse population (some 50% of Bolivian people are indigenous) and spectacular festivals.
