Peru's northern coastal region has been described as "the Egypt of South America" due to the large number of archaeological sites that are found here. Many civilisations flourished in this area, some dating back to many centuries / millenia BC. The region also has some fine beaches and one of Peru's most beautiful colonial architecture in Trujillo, capital of La Libertad department.
