Maqtas are jovial characters / jokers common at festivals in the Cusco region. They dance in groups, either by themselves or with other dance groups, and enjoy playing jokes and pranks on spectators. Parodies of modern news events are often included in the costumes, this dancer is wearing a mask to prevent him catching swine flu (there was a major outbreak worldwide in 2009 when the image was taken).
