Typical altar or mesa in family home
Many Bolivians believe the souls of their loved ones return to visit from midday on November 1st for 24 hours. They make elaborate preparations for the visit, including building altars (known as "mesas") in their homes with offerings and food for the souls. The next day they take these offerings to the cemeteries after midday to say farewell to the souls for another year.
