Colourful desert and Licancabur volcano, near San Pedro de Atacama
James has recently returned from a trip to the Atacama Desert regions of northern Chile and the images are now available on-line. As well as the surreal desert and mountain landscapes of the highlands and coastal regions the areas around the main towns of Arica, Iquique and Antofagasta have many lesser known attractions, including pre-Colombian geoglyphs, oases, pilgrimage sites and abandoned nitrate mining towns, testimony to days when this inhospitable region was one of the world's major industrial areas.
