Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Rainbow over Urubamba canyon
Rainbows were considered sacred by the Incas and are frequently seen at Machu Picchu. This fine example appears to mirror the form of Putu Cusi mountain as it rises from the Urubamba canyon. Did the lone tourist sitting on the rock find the pot of gold?
