Cerro or Mount Fitzroy is arguably the most impressive feature of the Los Glaciares National Park near El Calafate in the Argentine Patagonia. Other well known wonders in the region include the Perito Moreno glacier and the sheer granite needle of Cerro Torre.

Cerro Torre at sunrise

The dawn sun catches the granite needle of Cerro Torre, reflecting it in the still waters of Laguna Torre. The needle itself was long considered impossible by mountaineers; the Italian Cesare Maestri first climbed it in 1957 but the evidence was lost when his partner was killed in an avalanche on the descent, taking the expedition's camera with him. Maestri attempted the climb again in 1970 using a compressor drill to drive in the bolts, a technique that cause a furore in moutaineering circles. The first undisputed ascent was made in 1974 by the Italian Casimiro Ferrari.
