SAJAMA NATIONAL PARK

Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano scenery the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Sajama volcano

Bolivia's highest mountain at 6542m / 21,465ft, the Sajama volcano soars above the bleak plains of the altiplano. The sparse vegetation typical of the region is clear in this image; little grows in the dry volcanic soil or the harsh windy climate.
