Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Machu Picchu Panorama
The classic view of the famous Inca site, showing the main entrance on the left hand side and its situation on a steep ridge above the Urubamba canyon. The River Urubamba can just be seen at the foot of Huayna Picchu mountain, some 400m below the site.
