Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Aerial view of Machu Picchu
Aerial view of the Inca city, seen from the summit of Huayna Picchu mountain. Some theories suggest that Machu Picchu was laid out in the form of a condor when seen from above (the head at top right and open wings at the bottom, you then have to turn the image upside down). Whatever your opinion its a great view!
