Huayna Picchu and Intihuatana
This unusually carved stone rock is known as the Intihuatana (or "Hitching post of the Sun) and is situated at the highest point of the main temple and residential sector. As its name suggests it was used for astronomical observations and fixing the seasons. The sides of the carved vertical jamb are aligned with solstice and equinox sunrises and it is also situated to observe several other astronomical alignments. Some also think it was used in addition for mountain worship rituals; its form appears to imitate the Huayna Picchu peak behind and all the major mountains in the region are visible from where it is located.
