Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Machu Picchu and Urubamba canyon
A view looking down across the main plaza to the Urubamba canyon. The geography of the region is characterised by sheer jungle clad cliffs and canyons. The distinctive form of Putu Cusi mountain can be seen back left.
