Cerro Torre at sunrise

Close up of the sheer granite needle of Cerro Torre at sunrise. The needle itself was long considered impossible by mountaineers; the Italian Cesare Maestri first climbed it in 1957 but the evidence was lost when his partner was killed in an avalanche on the descent, taking the expedition's camera with him. Maestri attempted the climb again in 1970 using a compressor drill to drive in the bolts, a technique that cause a furore in moutaineering circles. The first undisputed ascent was made in 1974 by the Italian Casimiro Ferrari.
