PERU - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Few countries can boast such a rich archaeological heritage as Peru, where many civilizations dating back thousands of years have left their mark. Although the best known, the Incas are only the most recent; many impressive sites from their period can be visited in the Cusco region. Peru's northern coast has been described as the Egypt of South America and is one of richest archaeological regions on the planet.

Choquequirao

View of the main plaza of the Inca site of Choquequirao. Choquequirao means "cradle of gold" in Quechua and sits high on a ridge above the Apurimac river in a remote part of the Cordillera Vilcabamba. It is thought to have been built by Topa Inca, Pachacuti's sucessor and investigation suggests it may still have been occupied at the time of the Spanish conquest.
