Peru is synonymous with the Incas, without doubt the best known of the empires that existed in South America. They have left an impressive legacy of archaeological sites in the Cuzco region, many can be easily visited in the Urubamba river valley which is known as the Sacred Valley (or Valle Sagrado). As well as its ruins the area is also famous for its natural beauty and traditional villages.

Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is one of the best known Inca sites to be found in the Sacred Valley. Part temple, part fortress, it has some of the most impressive examples of Inca stonework ever constructed. It is also one of very few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish, in 1536 before retreating to the jungle.
