PERU - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Few countries can boast such a rich archaeological heritage as Peru, where many civilizations dating back thousands of years have left their mark. Although the best known, the Incas are only the most recent; many impressive sites from their period can be visited in the Cusco region. Peru's northern coast has been described as the Egypt of South America and is one of richest archaeological regions on the planet.

Ollantaytambo

Niches and doorway on the upper terrace approaching the unfinished Sun Temple. Ollantaytambo is one of the best known Inca sites to be found in the Sacred Valley close to Cusco. Part temple, part fortress, it has some of the most impressive examples of Inca stonework ever constructed. It is also one of very few places where the Incas defeated the Spanish, in 1536 before retreating to the jungle.
