Peru is synonymous with the Incas, without doubt the best known of the empires that existed in South America. They have left an impressive legacy of archaeological sites in the Cuzco region, many can be easily visited in the Urubamba river valley which is known as the Sacred Valley (or Valle Sagrado). As well as its ruins the area is also famous for its natural beauty and traditional villages.

Inca stonework
Detail of the awesome Inca stonework. This impressive wall is found at Ollantaytambo, one of the best known Inca sites to be found in the Sacred Valley. Blocks of several tons were cut from hard stone and fitted together so perfectly a knife blade cannot be inserted between them. The walls were also earthquake-proof.
