Peru is synonymous with the Incas, without doubt the best known of the empires that existed in South America. They have left an impressive legacy of archaeological sites in the Cuzco region, many can be easily visited in the Urubamba river valley which is known as the Sacred Valley (or Valle Sagrado). As well as its ruins the area is also famous for its natural beauty and traditional villages.

Inca salt terraces at Maras
Undoubtably the most unusual site in the Sacred Valley are the salt teraces at Maras. Water from a saturated salty spring has been channelled through a series of terraces and evaporation pans some 1km in length along the side of a steep valley. Salt is still collected in the same manner today by a local run co-operative.
