Peru is synonymous with the Incas, without doubt the best known of the empires that existed in South America. Cusco was their capital and the focus of Spanish attempts to subjugate them when they arrived in the city in 1533; there were several fierce battles until the Inca rebellion was finally put down with the execution of Tupac Amaru in 1572. It is still possible to see some of their archaeological sites and impressive stone construction; the Spanish built many colonial churches and buildings on top of the Inca foundations to exert their authority after the Conquest. Cusco today is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru and the main destination for tourists visiting the country.

Sacsayhuaman
A zig-zag Inca wall lit up at night in the site of Sacsayhuaman, situated on a hilltop overlooking Cusco. The site was the scene of the final battle in May 1536 that finally put an end to the Inca uprising against the Spanish conquest and contains some stones weighing an estimated 200 tons.
