Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Parinacota volcano
The perfectly conical form of the Parincota volcano (6330m / 20,765ft) rises above the barren altiplano. The volcano is part of a chain that form the border between Bolivia and northern Chile; this view shows typical farmhouses in the valley of the River Sajama.
