BOLIVIA & CHILE - SAJAMA & LAUCA NATIONAL PARKS

These two parks protect some of the most spectacular scenery found in the altiplano region; snow capped volcanoes rising above the barren plains and their wildlife. Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. Lake Chungará is the centrepiece of Chile's Lauca National Park, offering spectacular views of the Parinacota volcano.

Sajama volcano

Close up view of the north west face of the now extinct Sajama volcano, at 6542m / 21,465ft Bolivia's highest peak. The majority of this side appears to have been blown out by a huge eruption in the distant past; the valley leading towards it is now a route to one of the base camps for climbers wanting to reach the summit.
