Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Sajama volcano
This image shows perfectly how the Sajama volcano dominates the countryside, rising more than 2km above the grasslands of the altiplano. Water is scarce in what is a very dry region, the few lagoons such as this are popular with the area's wildlife.
