Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Payachatas volcanoes and alpacas
Alpacas and llamas are crucial to the survival of altiplano villagers in the bleak border regions of Bolivia and Chile. The volcanic ash and sand soil together with the dry windy climate means that growing crops is virtually impossible. The cameloids thrive on the native ichu grass and provide wool and meat for the villagers; the former in particular provides vital income in an area where there is little other.
