Chile's far northern regions contain some of the country's wildest scenery. To the east of the Atacama Desert (the world's driest) the Andes mountain chain rises steeply, forming the border with Bolivia and Argentina. Most of the peaks here are volcanic and are the highest in the country, with many volcanos rising above 6000m / approx 20,000ft. Lauca and Isluga National Parks have spectacular views of volcanoes and also protect rare high altitude fauna and flora. The high plains of the altiplano have been inhabited for millenia by the Aymara people, the Spanish colonisers built many quaint churches as they settled the region. Further south the world's highest geyser field can be visited at El Tatio near the popular tourist centre of San Pedro de Atacama.

Parinacota volcano and Lake Chungará
A rare windless day reflects the perfectly conical Parinacota volcano (6330m / 20,765ft) in the blue waters of Lake Chungará, Lauca National Park. The lake itself is at an altitude of some 4600m / 15,100ft and is one of the largest lakes found at that height anywhere in the world.
