Magical Andes Photography

PERU - MOUNTAINS

The Andes form a backbone down the centre of Peru, dividing the coastal desert from the Amazon basin. The Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash in the north of the country near Huaraz form the highest tropical mountain range in the world; while the world famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu offers views of the Cordilleras Vilcabamba and Vilcanota. Totally different but equally spectacular are the giant volcanoes that rise above the high altitude desert around Arequipa and the Colca Canyon in the south of the country.

Mt. Salcantay

A small glacial lake nestles beneath the awesome south west face of Mt. Salcantay, at 6271m / 20,575ft the highest peak in the Inca Trail region. Salcantay means "Wild mountain" due the the number of avalanches that crash down its steep faces and has only ever been climbed once, by a Japanese team (who cheated?!) using suction pads.
