BOLIVIA - CORDILLERA REAL

The Cordillera Real (or “Royal Range”) is the longest and highest mountain range in Bolivia. Many peaks over 6000m can be found in its 100 mile length, several of which can be seen from Bolivia’s capital, La Paz. Its western flanks soar above the altiplano, to the east it drops precipitously to the Yungas region and Amazon lowlands.

Mt. Mururata

A perfect dawn reflects the flat topped Mt. Mururata (5868m / 19,250ft) in the still waters of Lake Khelluani. Various legends tell of how Mururata used to be much higher but was beheaded (the meaning of Mururata); in one version by the creator god Viracocha as punishment for arrogance, in another by neighbouring peak Illimani after a battle for supremacy.
