Ice trekking, Grey Glacier

Exploring the other-worldy scenery on the surface of Grey Glacier. The stormy sky only enhances the blue colour of the ice. As the ice is compressed by its own weight air bubbles (which make the ice appear white) are squeezed out; the resulting compressed ice filters out all the other colours of the spectrum, leaving the blues to shine through. The older the ice the deeper and clearer the blue; the oldest parts resemble like deep blue stained glass.
