Vicuñas grazing

Smallest, rarest and most beautiful of the South American cameloids, vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) were hunted almost to extinction for their wool, some of the finest on the planet (even more so than alpaca wool). So fine that in Inca times its use was only permitted for the royal family. Now fully protected, then can be seen in herds on the high altiplano in southern Peru, Bolivia and northern Chile.
