MACHU PICCHU

Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Inca terracing

Some of the spectacular and extensive Inca terracing at Machu Picchu. Large areas around Cusco were terraced by the Incas for agricultural use; this maximised the area available and improved stability on the steep mountainsides. Such practice was not unique to the Incas; impressive and much older terracing in the Colca Canyon region of Peru shows the technique was developed by earlier civilisations.
