PERU - MACHU PICCHU

Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown to the outside world until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Aerial view of Machu Picchu

A shaft of sunlight illuminates the city of Machu Picchu, seen from Machu Picchu mountain. Machu Picchu is situated on a ridge between two peaks, the lower sheer peak of Huayna Picchu ("young peak" in Quechua) dominates most photographs and its lower flanks are in the background of this image. Behind the city is the higher peak of Machu Picchu ("old peak"); such a location would have appealed to the Andean concept of duality and balance in the universe.
