Aymara chieftain

An Aymara man from the altiplano. The Aymara people are one of two main indigenous groups in Bolivia (the other being Quechua) and are concentrated in the altiplano region in the west of the country and around Lake Titicaca. Most people who live around the Peruvian side of the Lake are also Aymara. Some 25% of Bolivia’s population speak Aymara as a first language; it is also one of 3 official languages in Bolivia. The red and black striped ponchos are typical af the La Paz area.
