The Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash are found in northern Peru near Huaraz in the department of Ancash. The Cordillera Blanca is the highest range in Peru and also the highest tropical mountain range in the world, with the Cordillera Huayhuash not far behind. Both ranges are noted for their spectacular icy peaks which provide some of the best mountaineering in South America and also their turquoise glacial lakes and unique and varied flora.

Mt Huascaran
Peru’s highest peak, Huascaran (6768m / 22,200ft) dominates the Callejon de Huaylas to the north of Huaraz. Soils in the lower valleys are very fertile and continue to be farmed by Quechua people as they have been for centuries.
