LAKE DISTRICT

The northern part of Chilean Patagonia (also known as the Araucania region) contains one of the world's most beautiful lake districts. As well as lakes the area is renowned for its snow capped volcanoes and is also the only region where you can find native Araucaria or "Monkey Puzzle" forests.

Llaima volcano

Llaima volcano (3125m / 10,250ft) rises above the clouds, seen here from the summit of Cerro San Sebastian in Huerquehue National Park, Chile. The central feature of Chile's Conguillio National Park; it is Chile's second most active volcano and its frequent eruptions are destroying much of the Park's natural vegetation.
