The Andean countries are some of the most biodiverse on the planet. For example, Peru contains some 84 of the worlds known 103 ecological zones and has over 1700 recorded bird species (a total only bettered by Colombia), while Bolivia’s Madidi National Park is thought to contain more species than any other with some 10% of the world total (in an area roughly the size of Wales), with Peru’s Manu National Park very close behind. The Patagonian coasts of Chile and Argentina are home to an impressive variety of marine life and seabirds, with some of the largest penguin and seal colonies to be found outside of Antarctica.
