The Andean countries are some of the most biodiverse on the planet. For example, Peru contains some 84 of the worlds known 103 ecological zones and is one of the world’s 5 most biodiverse countries. Nowhere else in the world can such high mountains be found within tropical regions, resulting in many unique ecosystems, especially on the eastern slopes of the Andes where the peaks drop to the Amazon basin in a very short distance and many of the cloud forest habitats are unique. Orchids are but one of the regions specialities, with some 300+ species found along the Inca Trail and in the Machu Picchu Sanctuary alone, with many more no doubt waiting to be discovered. While containing less species the forests and flora of Patagonia are equally unique. Of particular interest are members of the southern beech or
Nothofagus family and the Araucaria or "Monkey Puzzle" forests.
