Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Lagunillas church
The Sajama region of the altiplano is famous for its small rustic churches built of adobe (mud) bricks. Many have fallen into disuse but some are still visited by the local priest on a regular (often weekly) basis. In the background is the Sajama volcano ( 6542m / 21,465ft).
