Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Burial towers
Burial towers or chullpas have been used for millenia in parts of the altiplano for burying the dead, and still are today in some areas. These are two of the many found in the Desaguadero River valley, which is the main watercourse in the region and flows from Lake Titicaca (its only natural outlet) to Lake Poopo near Oruro.
