Sajama was the first National Park to be established in Bolivia (in 1942) and contains the country’s highest mountain of the same name. As well as protecting some of Bolivia's most spectacular altiplano landscapes the Park is also home to unusual high altitude wildlife and flora. The region is also noted for its rustic adobe churches and chullpas (or burial towers).

Cairn and clouds
The peaks in the region are important deities to the indigenous inhabitants; apachetas or cairns mark sites where mountain worship rituals are still performed. The twin Payachatas volcanoes (Parinacota L, Pomerape R) that form part of the border between Bolivia and Chile are in the background.
