The northern part of Chilean Patagonia (also known as the Araucania region) contains one of the world's most beautiful lake districts. As well as lakes the area is renowned for its snow capped volcanoes and is also the only region where you can find native Araucaria or "Monkey Puzzle" forests.

Puerto Varas
Puerto Varas is one of the most interetsing towns in the southern Lake District. Much of this region was originally colonised by Germans; the Sacred Heart church in Puerto Varas was built by Germnan Jesuits in 1918 and is a copy of the Marieenkircke in the Black Forest.
