Araucaria tree

Araucaria tree

A huge lone Araucaria or "Monkey Puzzle" tree (Araucaria araucana) grows on the Patagonian steppe. One of the world's most unique and spectacular trees, it is a member of the pine family and is only found in the wild in the northern parts of Patagonia in Chile and Argentina, where it can form dense forests at higher altitudes. It is very slow growing and long lived; the largest specimens can reach 40m in height and an age of 2-3,000 years old.
