Probably South America's best known capital city, Buenos Aires has an atmosphere and style that is unique. It grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fuelled by huge numbers of immigrants from Europe (mainly Spain and Italy) and money from meat, leather and wool industries among others (between the World Wars Argentina was one of the world's richest countries). Spending on remodelling the city in this period was enormous, not for nothing it is sometimes called "The Paris of South America" due to its European style architecture.

Sarmiento frigate, Puerto Madero
The Sarmiento frigate was an early 20th century naval vessel and is now a museum and national monument. It is moored in the revamped docks of Puerto Madero, once the original port of Buenos Aires and now a popular area of bars and restaurants.
