The famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is almost certainly the most popular trek in South America, offering very diverse scenery and the chance to visit many other Inca archaeological sites as well as Machu Picchu. There are several alternatives to the "Classic" route, some taking you very close to the impressive Mt Salcantay, the highest peak in the region. Recently trails to another impressive Inca site, Choquequirao (often called Machu Picchu's sister city), have become more popular. These routes take you deep into the Apurimac Canyon and stunning mountain wilderness, for keen trekkers it is possible to trek from Choquequirao on to Santa Teresa and Machu Picchu.
High quality photographic prints of Peru with a wide choice of framing options, canvas wrap prints and greeting cards are available. Please visit the Framed Prints page for more details. Mt Salcantay
Mt. Salcantay, at 6271m / 20,575ft, is the highest peak in the Inca Trail region. Salcantay means "Wild mountain" due the the number of avalanches that crash down its steep faces. This view was taken from near the campsite at Puyupatmarka, the peak to the right of the image is Mt Huamantay (5917m).
