Weaver, Taquile Island

Detail of a woman from Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca weaving in the traditional manner. The island is noted for its textiles which are some of the most intricate produced in Peru; the women weave while the men knit. The island is Quechua speaking, unusual in the Titicaca and altiplano region bordering Bolivia where Aymara is the main ethnic group and language.

For more information on visiting Taquile Island and trip packages visit the Taquile Island Community Based Travel Agency website. Owned and managed by the islanders rather than outsiders, its a great way to support this unique island community.
