Peru's northern coastal region has been described as "the Egypt of South America" due to the large number of archaeological sites that are found here. Many civilisations flourished in this area, some dating back to many centuries / millenia BC. The region also has some fine beaches and one of Peru's most beautiful colonial architecture in Trujillo, capital of La Libertad department.

Trujillo
Trujillo contains some of Peru's most beautiful and distinctive colonial architecture, in a very different style to the highland towns. The Moorish style interior of Casa Baanante is particularly impressive and unusual. The town was founded in 1534 by conquistador Diego de Almagro and named after the town in Spain where Francisco Pizarro, leader of the Inca conquest, was born.
