Bowler hat stall, La Paz

One of La Paz's most notable features are its huge sprawling indigenous street markets, almost anything can be found in them! The Aymara women or "Cholitas" often manage the business and invariably wear bowler hats. Where the tradition started is a matter of debate, some say they copied the Spanish or more likely the British in the 19th century (who were then building much of South America's rail network). Another story tells of an enterprising trader who, having imported a bulk lot of bowler hats and failed to sell them to the men managed to clear his stock by passing them off as fashionable ladies wear!
