Carnival is celebrated enthusiastically across much of Latin America, with the celebrations in Brazil probably being the most famous. It is held in the week or so before Lent and is thought to have its origins in the consumption of food and drink in festivals before the 40 day period of fasting for Lent. In Bolivia the Oruro Carnival is one of the most famous celebrations in South America and has been declared a UNESCO cultural heritage. It is celebrated in honour of the Virgen de la Socavon (the name of the former mines in the city) and is best known for its spectacular Diablada (Devil) dances. There are also many other colourful festivals held across the country.
High quality photographic prints of festivals with a wide choice of framing options, canvas wrap prints and greeting cards are available. Please visit the Framed Prints page for more details.

Diablada dancers
The Diablada is one of Bolivia’s most famous dances, partly for its spectacular masks and costumes and partly its association with the Oruro Carnival, one of the biggest in South America. It represents the struggle between good and evil. Here the Archangel Michael leads a group of dancing devils.
