Pujllay musicians
The Pujllay is danced every March by the people of Tarabuco (near Sucre). The festival celebrates the Battle of Jumbate in 1816 where local warriors defeated Spanish colonial forces (and if legend is to be believed ripped their hearts out and ate them!) The Quechua people of the region are noted for their colourful and unique traditional dress; their helmet-like hats are said to be copies of the Spanish helmets.
